First Steps

Cogratulations on your new website!  We are so glad you have become a part of the Build A Church Website Family. With this article we are going to try to give you a quick run down of some common issues/explanations when starting out.

There are 2 places you can edit your website:

  1. The front end - this is where your visitors browse the pages...it is the website itself...what you can edit here is limited
  2. The back end - this is where only the administrators can go and...whatever you cannot edit from the front end you can edit here...plust most of the stuff that you can edit from the front end

*Note:  Some like to edit from the front end and some from the back.  You will have to find out what works for you best.

**Note: Your website is divided up into two main areas component/content and then modules.  The component/content area are the areas that are in the main section of your page.  The modules are those areas that are on the sides, tops, bottoms, ect... on the pages.

See example Picture:

Quick Questions

What is the difference between Content and A Component ?

  • Content is only information that you type into the page. It is static and does not dynamcally change.
  • Component is a "thinking" part of the website...like a calendar, or sermon component.  These are software that run inside of the page.
  • The content/component area can have either content or it will call a component.
How do modules work ?
  • modules are assigned to menu items not pages.  A menu item will call either content or a component and then have modules assigned to it
  • modules can be like mini components and have "thinking" behind them, many of them are connected to components as a addon to the component like a mini calendar, or upcoming events.
  • modules can be just information like a content area but assigned to a module position

Front End Editing:

Just go to yourwebsite.com

Here is a short list of what you can edit from the front end:

  • Edit existing content pages
  • Many functions of the components.  They are limited in some cases though. For instance you can add new calendar events from the front end but you cannot make new event categories as that must be done from the backend.
  • Upload sermons
  • Add events to the calendar to existing categories
  • Upload documents into the virtual filing cabinet to existin categories
  • Some other little things that will vary according to your custom design

Back End Editing:

just go to yourwebsite.com/administrator

Here is a short list of what you can edit from the backend
  • Make new pages
  • Make new menu items
  • Edit existing pages
  • Edit existing menu items
  • Edit modules and their positions
  • Make new modules
  • Make new calendars and calendar categories
  • Make new document categories in virtual filing cabinet
  • Manage newsletter subscriptions (if using)
  • Publish new newsletters and email them
  • Manage prayer center requests, subscribers, ect...
  • Edit/Approve/Add/Permission users
  • Change frontpage billboard
  • Edit scrolling announcements (these are the articles in the news or newsflash category)
  • Other miscellaneous settings depending on your custom layout
